I am concerned that most of us as a child always cried over split milk. We cried easily when we were younger, but when we grew up we rarely to do it based on different reasons. For example, we do not cry much or cry in front of other people because we are shameful, we are expected not to cry as adultery, we think that it is a sign of weakness, etc. All of these things lead us not want to cry anymore whether in front of people or not, and it caused us to get more stress and depression. This led me to came up with this article to inform you of three reasons why we should cry.

1. Crying releases you from a hard heart.

Our heart is tough because we hold many things so much in it including depression, concerning, anxiety, stress, etc. Those negative feelings make you want to cry. On the contrast, mostly, you did not do it because you think that you are controlled and you should not do it especially in front of other people. However, as Doty mentioned that both of your heart and body feel more relaxed when you cry (44).

2. Crying makes you feel more relaxed and comfortable.

Don’t you know that crying makes you feel more free and comfortable? The more you hold your negative feelings with you, the more you feel it much more than you can handle them. Besides, they are not going to anywhere else until you cry. Crying also stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) helping people to feel more relaxed, and oxytocin and endorphins are released when humans are self-soothing and having tears. These chemicals help humans to feel good and their physical and emotional pain is eased. On other words, it means that crying can make less physical and mental pain and display a sense of well-being.

3. Crying reduces stress and depression.

Crying can also reduce your stress and depression as it helps humans to relive their pain due to oxytocin and endorphins. They can improve bad moods. Therefore, the oxytocin and endorphins are being called as “feel good” chemicals. Stress hormones as cortisol are released after crying too because both physical and emotional are released to humans to start over.

However, you can trick your feelings by forcing your facial expression. For instance, your heart will feel better when you try to smile when you are sad. It called as faking unfelt emotion or suppressing felt emotions to force your facial expression opposite to what you feel (Mann 114). On the contrary, I do not think that it is a good idea to ignore your true feelings because your feelings are not truly gone away.

“It’s the same with the wounds in our heart. We need to give them our attention so that they can heal.” — Into the Magic Shop by James R. Doty. MD.

I know it is hard to cry as you are used to holding your tear, but I still want to encourage you to cry because it has benefits to you. I wish you have a place to cry or people who you can cry with them.
